Ever wonder what it takes to become a yoga teacher? Think it's too hard? Well, Yoga One is offering a teacher training course to get you started.
Kelly O'Connell from Yoga One joined The Rhode Show to talk more about the training course.
Why take a yoga teacher training course?
Whether you are new on the path of yoga and self-discovery or you are looking to deepen your existing practice, participating in a teacher training course will take your practice and your understanding of the true principles of yoga and conscious living to the next level.
Do I need to take a teacher training course from a Yoga Alliance registered yoga school to become a yoga teacher?
You don't have to attend a registered yoga school to teach yoga. It's an industry credential. However by choosing a school that is registered with Yoga Alliance you are assured of a comprehensive curriculum and a highly-trained faculty.
What is Yoga Alliance?
In the United States, teacher-training programs that meet certain standards are registered by Yoga Alliance, a nationally recognized organization. There are two levels of Yoga Alliance certificates- 200 Hour and 500 Hour, referring to the length of the program. Trainees first complete a 200- Hour program, which most yoga studios require as the minimum training for their teachers. Some teachers then choose to continue their studies by undertaking a 500-Hour training.
What types of things are covered in a 200-hour training program?
Registered yoga schools are required to include the following categories in their curriculum.
Techniques Training & Practice: Includes asana (postures), pranayama, (breathing) meditation and other traditional Yoga techniques. The trainee will learn how to teach as well
as participate in guided practice of the techniques themselves.
Teaching Methodology: Includes training in demonstration, observation and assisting/ correcting. Also covered are types of instruction and teaching styles. The qualities of a
teacher, how a student learns and the business aspects of teaching yoga are included here.
Anatomy & Physiology: Trainees study both human physical anatomy and physiology (bodily systems, organs, etc.) and energy anatomy and physiology (chakras, nadis, etc.).
Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics for Yoga Teachers
Practicum: This is practice teaching, receiving feedback, observing others teaching and hearing/giving feedback. Also includes assisting students while someone else is teaching.
What is the structure of a teacher training program?
It varies. Some are intensives that last from two to three weeks. Others are spread out over anywhere from 4 months to a year. Many students enter a teacher training program to learn more about something they love, with no intention of teaching yoga. Then by the end of the training, they can’t wait to get in front of that first class.
Yoga One’s teacher training school is registered with Yoga Alliance and offers training three times a year. The next one begins September, 2012.
