Ultimate Bootcamp exercises and tips

So, you've been on vacation, indulging in all your favorite food and drinks and now it's time to start burning it off.

Jill Tomich and Peter Lavelle, co-founders of Ultimate Bootcamp , joined The Rhode Show to share exercises and techniques.

"With people consuming so many summer-fun calories, and still needing to look good in a swimsuit, the best bang for the time-challenged buck is to fuse cardio and muscle work together. It’s essential that we get the most from our exercise time, and choosing heart rate-elevating muscle exercises will go a long way towards that. Exercises that include body weight will challenge your cardiovascular output, while focusing on toning a specific muscle group," said Pete Lavelle.

There are common vacation indulgences that people may not realize have high calories that add up quickly.

- Fudge/salt water taffy
- Hamburger/hot dog
- Lobster roll/fried clams/similar
- Ice cream
- Wine, beer or a margarita

There are "at least 700 calories in just one cup of soft serve ice cream in a cone. You would have to walk five hours at a fast pace to burn off all these calories!" explained Jill.

Some exercised demonstrated in this segment:

STEP-UPS:
Step-ups will work on firming up the lower body – glutes, hamstrings, and quads, while getting the pulse pumping.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS:
Mountain Climbers are another great example of using body weight to challenge and trim your core and upper body, while continuing to elevate your heart rate.

ALTERNATING KNEE LIFTS:
Even an exercise as simple as alternating knee lifts while rotating straight arms in small circles will tone shoulders, work the legs, and still maintain a good caloric burn rate.

Programs that incorporate this type of approach to exercising, such as boot camps, can burn 500-700 calories in one workout, and will give the additional benefit of burning calories during rest from the muscle work that’s in there.

Ultimate Bootcamp recently launched in Providence at Memorial Park and has more than a dozen locations in New England.
