When the X Games first began in 1995 they were held right here in Rhode Island. Since then, the X Games have expanded to twice a year and feature some of the best athletes from around the world.
Five time X Games gold medalist and East Providence native Kevin Robinson joined the Rhode Show to talk about what we can look forward to during the games in Aspen next week.
“I’m really excited to go to Aspen, I go every year. In the past it has been called the ‘Winter X Games” but with the global expansion there are actually six X Games this year,” said Kevin.
Action sports are different than typical team sports because coaches generally are not involved in the sport, and it’s highly dependent on the athlete. Kevin says that the X-Games are a great outlet for kids.
“(X Games) give kids an outlet. Not everyone wants to play baseball or football, some kids might identify more with snowboarding, skiing or BMX biking,” said Kevin.
The X Games are a way for kids, teens, and adults alike to showcase their talents and maybe some day make it on an Olympic team.
“It’s a prestige event, especially with the global expansion of X Games,” he said.
