PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the holiday is a great time to teach your kids what being an American is all about.
It's that time of year again, to celebrate our nation's birthday. In addition to all the festivities, don't forget the reason for the holiday.
As you know, it's the anniversary of the adoption if the Declaration of Independence, which occurred on July 4, 1776. In 1941, Congress declared the Fourth a legal public holiday, and there are many ways to celebrate the birth of America.
The nation's oldest Fourth of July parade takes place right on the streets of Bristol. Miss USA, our very own Olivia Culpo, will be gracing the parade route this year!
The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra is preparing for a great concert at India Point Park in Providence. Also, a very fun and patriotic evening is planned at the Rose Island Lighthouse.
Of course, fireworks will be set off in many locations across the country!
In addition to the celebrations, there are many historic sites just a short drive away.
"We have the Gatsby House in Lincoln, you can travel to Boston to see the Quincy Adams home and all of the different ships," said Kelli Domenico of The Children's Workshop . "These are ways to get your family involved, and get your children involved. Not only do the kids have fun and learn something, but the adults can too. It's a great opportunity for everybody."
Also, be sure to make learning exciting! You can even get your family together to make a play about the Enactment of the Thirteen Colonies or the Boston Tea Party!
