(WPRI) --  Labor Day weekend is a great way for families to wind down, conclude summer festivities, and enter into “fall” mode!

Heather Grocott of The Children’s Workshop has some great ideas to make the most out of your Labor Day Weekend.

If you live in Rhode Island, you may want to try some of the local events listed below:

  •  The 13th Annual Newport Irish Festival takes place September 4-6 at Commercial Wharf in Newport
  • The 14th Annual Rhythm and Roots Festival at Ninigret Park, located at 4813 Old Post Road (Route 1A) in Charlestown
  • East Greenwich Art Festival takes place September 3 (Rain Date: September 4) from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 1408 Division Road, East Greenwich

Maybe you want to start your own tradition for Labor Day. Here are some great family friendly tips that are sure to kick off your long weekend to the right start:

Make a clothesline of fall/winter activities
At your Labor Day Weekend cookout or BBQ, set up a table with index cards and bright markers. Invite all members of the family to write down an activity, task, or goal they would like to accomplish during the fall and winter months. Pick a place in your house, and “hang” your index cards using clothespins in a central area in your home. As your family accomplishes the activities, you can take them down!

Have a slideshow
It is always fun looking back at old pictures! Most laptops and PC’s now have a “slideshow” option when you insert your memory card of pictures. Set up a TV, projector, or computer monitor up at your Labor Day Weekend and look back at all of the memories and fun you had with your family all summer long!

Visit your favorite park or beach
Labor Day weekend is a great time to get in one last visit to your favorite park or beach. Remember to keep your state beaches and parks clean, please!

Visit your local bike or walking path
Make a point to exercise with your family this Labor Day with a morning walk or bike ride. This is an excellent opportunity to bond with your family as well as encourage exercising!

Get away
If you’ve worked hard all year and neglected to have fun during the summer months, plan a weekend get away with the family. Remember this is your time to relax – choose a destination that is laid back, low key, affordable, and low maintenance.
