Now that the school year is in full swing, it may be a good time to consider joining your child’s school’s parent group.
Being on a parent committee allows you the opportunity to get involved in planning events and share personal preference.
Mother Sabrina Smith Lawrence explains why she chose to be part of the parent committee in her child’s school, “I feel like education is a partnership between the parent, the children, and the teachers. I think that is what gets children to be successful in schools because there’s no triangulation, everyone’s on the same page and you get to guide your child’s education. ”
Parent committees are also not just for parents. You want to encourage teachers to be a part of it so parents, teachers, and students can work together.
Some parents may find it hard to free up time in their schedule for another meeting.
“Even though it is sometimes difficult and you’re tired, you make that commitment to your child’s education. I think that children are going to be more successful because of that,” said Lawrence.
One of the benefits to joining a PTO or PTA is that parents get a voice in their early learning center or school. Another benefit is that parents get to know one another.
It is also important to plan a time for these meetings that is convenient and offer babysitting so everyone can come.
During the meeting remember to ask people to offer feedback, their ideas, and make people feel more comfortable.
