Last-minute Valentine's Day planning

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- In case you haven't heard, it's Valentine's Day.

Of course, you planned ahead this year and can now spend the day relaxing at home with your significant other. But for the Valentine's Day procrastinators out there, Susan Hogan has you covered with last-minute tips on everything from buying flowers to working the dating websites.

Ordering flowers:

Most florists' deadlines for ordering flower arrangements have already passed, but it's still possible to scramble together a bouquet delivery through a smaller, neighborhood shop. But, before you order, keep in mind these tips:

• Get some sort of a guarantee that the flowers will be delivered on time. Nobody wants to spend all of that money to have their gifts arrive after the big holiday.
• Give the florist exact information, including your cell phone number so they can get in touch with you throughout the day.
• Take advantage of the "Freshness Guarantee." If your flowers arrive at the door withered or dead, say something. It won't be nitpicking; it will just be making sure you get what you paid for.
• Beware of hidden costs and feeds. Some telemarketing firms pose as local flower shops and charge unsuspecting customers through the roof.

Working the dating sites:

Online dating has become a great, safe way for single people to make connections, and many singles will log on to their matchmaker sites on Valentine's Day. But be aware of these scam artist warning signs.

• If someone asks to leave the dating site platform immediately in favor of personal email or Instant Messaging, they might have something up their sleeve.
• Be skeptical of people who express their undying love in a matter of minutes. Love at first sight may exist, but so do online dating scams.
• If your online pen-pal plans and cancels multiple visits because of "traumatic events" or "sour business deals," it's a good sign that they might not be who they say there are.
