Updating container gardens for fall

Build a miniature Terrarium

Terrariums are a great way to try your hand at indoor container gardening.

Terrariums can fit in any décor, and can be any size! The best part is that you are able to use your imagination.

Sarah Partyka from The Farmer’s Daughter, joined The Rhode Show to demonstrate how to build a terrarium.

First you will need a glass container, just keep in mind that the wider the mouth of your terrarium, the easier it will be to fill it. That said, you can always use chopsticks or tools especially designed to fill tight spaces.

First, you will want to fill the base with some rocks to add drainage.  Next, add some moss, and in the center some soil.

Now you are able to start arranging your plants. You can add other elements of nature – such as egg shells, sea shells, or twigs.

The Farmer’s Daughter is hosting miniature terrarium design classes on Thursday September 20 at 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

They will discuss different types of terrariums, the varieties of plants that thrive in them, and the purpose of the individual layers and the process of building one to help keep your terrarium alive long into the future! Each student will then design and build one to take home.

  • Cost is $50.00
  • Class includes a glass vessel, soil, layering components and plants
  • Guidance in design, tips for successful growth, care & maintenance
  • Pre-registration is required, call 792-1340
