(WPRI) - Nearly 3,000 people are gathering in Providence for Netroots Nation 2012 . Political activists, journalists and bloggers are attending the national conference.
Mayor Angel Taveras is taking an active role for this event. On Friday, June 8, Mayor Taveras will walk the convention floor to greet conference attendees.
Later in the evening, the Mayor and US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse will host a Netroots Nation block party at Local 121, a farm-to-table restaurant at the corner of Washington and Mathewson Streets in downtown Providence.
“We have thousands of people from around the country here. We have the Netroots Nation convention right here in the city of Providence and we’re thrilled to have them. You’re going to see a lot people in down city Providence enjoying themselves and really talking about our city in a positive way and it’s going to reach people all around the world. We’re very excited,” said Mayor Angel Taveras.
And on Saturday, attendees will be able to experience the one and only WaterFire Providence.
“WaterFire is fantastic. It was something that we talked about and how unique it was and it’s an experience that they can only have here,” added Taveras.
Barnaby Evans, creator of WaterFire, couldn't be more pleased that such a large group will be able to experience this unique attraction.
“It’s so fun to see new eyes see the city. And they just come here and go “Wow, this is a place where it’s happening,” and that brings new business in, new jobs in, it reflects all the work the mayor’s been doing,” said Barnaby Evans.
On Saturday, WaterFire will also present The Gaspee Project. WaterFire Providence will present “Revolutionary Fire” a dynamic, short play for families that is a great introduction to the characters, issues and history of the Gaspee Affair.
Performances are free and will be held at 5:30 pm and 7:00 p,m, on Saturday, June 9, 2012 in the Old State House located at 150 Benefit Street .
And one block from the original site of Sabin’s Tavern WaterFire Providence is creating The New Sabin’s Tavern in cooperation with The Wild Colonial at the intersection of South Water Street and Power Street ( 250 South Water Street ). Sample period liquors and fine ales in a historic site and witness a recreation of this historic debate among the citizens of Providence.
