NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) -- This weekend marks the Triennial Weekend of Coaching in Newport, which celebrates and preserves a centuries-old sporting tradition involving horses, carriages, and fashion.

Coaching used to be a very popular mode of transportation, but today it's looked at as more of a sport.

The free event hosted by the The Preservation Society of Newport County kicks off Thursday at the Breakers Stable, located at 53 Coggeshall Ave. One or two drives will take place each day, and they usually center around Ocean Drive, since that's one of the city's prettiest spots.

The special event consists of amazing horses with coaches from all over the country, and it's such a  photographic moment, that the drivers recommend you bring two cameras, just in case!

"We will have twelve coaches come in from as far away as Florida and Texas, to as close as Bristol, and with twelve coaches that means we will have about sixty horses during the weekend," said Kenneth Lindh , Chairman of the Coaching Weekend.

Everybody on the coach is supposed to wear late 19th Century garb, which means no sunglasses! Gloves, hats, and a coat and tie is the standard attire for men, and the ladies all wear hats and dresses.

“On Saturday morning at 10;30 a.m., all twelve coaches will come in and basically do a little parade, a little show for about 45 minutes," Lindh added."It's a great way to see all of the coaches."

The event happens Thursday through Sunday, and for more information and a full schedule of events you can go to The Preservation Society's website.
