Dozens of acts at Newport Jazz Festival

Multiple stages to be set up for festival

(WPRI/AP) - This weekend is the Annual Newport Jazz Festival , with dozens of acts set to take multiple stages throughout the weekend.

The event is scheduled to kick off Friday at the International Tennis Hall of Fame with a concert by Dr. John and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The festival moves to Fort Adams State Park on Saturday and Sunday.

Rick Massimo from The Providence Journal joined The Rhode Show with a preview.

Thursday's edition of The Providence Journal highlights some of this year's acts.

Some notable names headed to the City by the Sea:

  • Jack DeJohnette All-Stars
  • Bill Frisell
  • Dianne Reeves
  • Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society
  • John Ellis and Double-Wide
  • Ken Peplowski
  • Evan Christopher
  • Anat Cohen
  • The James Carter Organ Trio featuring Rodney James & Miche Braden
  • Christian McBride’s Inside Straight
  • The bad Plus featuring Bill Frisell

Twenty high school students are expected to play as well. The Rhode Island Music Educators Association Senior All-State Jazz Ensemble are expected to perform on Saturday.    

The jazz event, first held in 1954, has showcased a who's who of jazz stars. Wein took the festival and its sister event, the Newport Folk Festival, nonprofit last year in an attempt to ensure their long-term success.
