In celebration of National Coffee Day this year, Dunkin’ Donuts is holding a week-long fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics RI and Southeast Mass.

Coffee for a cause

From September 22 through September 30, guests at participating Dunkin’ Donuts who make a $1 donation will receive a pin-up donut with their name that will be displayed in-store.

Proceeds will be donated primarily to the Special Olympics with a portion going to the Dunkin’ Donuts Baskin Robbins Community Foundation, which supports other local partnerships.

“As we strive to gain acceptance, inclusion and respect for people with intellectual disabilities, we are proud and honored to partner with Dunkin’ Donuts, which continues to provide inspiration, encouragement and support of our athletes,” said Dennis DeJesus, CEO, Special Olympics Rhode Island.

Great brewing tips for coffee lovers

Ellen Rogers, manager of coffee excellence for Dunkin' Brands, also joined The Rhode Show to discuss her five tips for brewing the best cup of coffee.

1. Use only fresh coffee and grind as you go (don’t pre-grind). Once the package is opened ground coffee will remain fresh for 7 days, whole bean for 20.
2. Clean your coffee brewer and carafe of any coffee residue and use fresh, cold water for brewing.
3. Never allow your coffee to sit on the burner for more than 20 minutes. Continued cooking will change the flavor and aroma attributes.
4. Store unused coffee in a cool, dry place, and keep at room temperature. Coffee should be stored in an air-tight container that’s not see-through.
5. Do not store coffee beans in the refrigerator or freezer, they absorb food odors and condensation, and the flavor of the coffee won’t be up to par.
