WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - February 2 was just Groundhog Day to most of us, but to Greenwood Elementary school in Warwick, it was quite a special day.

Sixth graders teamed up with their principal and faculty members, and rehearsed a Groundhog Day flash mob.

"Groundhog Day is special to Greenwood School because the groundhog is our school's mascot," said Stephanie Kellerman.

And every February 2, the students show their school spirit.

"The three R's rally is just a little program we put on Groundhog's Day, to remind our school what the three R's mean. And what they're all about. The three R's are responsible, respectful and ready, and when we follow them, we can do, well, we can do really good in school," said Kellerman.

This year, students and teachers secretly met, and with the guidance of instructors from the Warwick dance and Gymmastic's Academy, prepared a surprise.

"We're going to be doing a flash mob and it's when we we just break out in dancing, and I think this will help show the kids show the kids you can have fun, but you can still remember the three R's at the same time. And that will help you succeed in the long run," said Sara Hathaway.

The song they choose to dance to was Respect, by Aretha Franklin.

"The song is respectful, and so we are all dancing to that song to show the little kids what it means to be responsible respectful and ready," said Abigail Burdick.

After many rehearsals, the kids had the moves down pat. The Greenwood kids were ready to rock the school!

Thanks to a fearless and fun staff, as well as a really cool principal, the sixth grade class of 2012 will have a school event they will never forget.

"Its really fun because principals are usually kinda serious, and he's really nice," continued Abigail Burdick.

"These kids are amazing, I mean the kids in this school are incredible. They are so good to one another, they are so respectful, responsible and ready, they do whatever you ask whenever you ask them to do it, they are always there when you need them. Just the best kids, not only in Rhode Island, the best kids anywhere," said Principal Dennis Winn.
