PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - More than 250 Rhode Islanders pledged to serve their communities Monday at the kick-off of the new AmeriCorps service year.
AmeriCorps is a federally-funded program that engages volunteers in community service.
Several Rhode Island leaders took part in the Opening Day ceremony at the State House, including U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Congressman David Cicilline, Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts, and Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox.
According to a news release, more than five hundred people take part in more than a dozen AmeriCorps programs across Rhode Island.
