JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Boxes, holiday gift wrappings, bottles and more trash.

Recycling centers like the one in Johnston are seeing an increase in the number of people disposing their garbage properly.

Normally, there is only one giant mound made of recycled bottles and cans, but this year, there are three.

Part of this increase can be explained by all of those recent holiday parties, but this mess is much bigger than those created by christmases past.

Sarah Kite from the Rhode Island Resource and Recovery Corporation says, "last year at this time, we saw maybe about 375 tons a day, just on Monday we had 499 tons in one day.

kite says they are getting more bottles and cans than ever since the start of the Providence green-up program, otherwise known as the no bin, no barrel rule.

While paper recycling is down a little bit this year, recycling as a whole has held steady in Rhode Island, putting the State miles above the rest of the country.

While not everyone has been on board with no bin no barrel, Kite expects the program to save Providence alone hundreds of thousands of dollars this year
