EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - On this special Web extra edition of Newsmakers, former U.S. Congresswoman Claudine Schneider.

Schneider was elected to represent Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980, the first Republican to win a House seat in the state since 1938. She stayed in office until 1990, when she failed in a bid to oust incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell.

On a rare visit back to Rhode Island, Schneider talks about why Congress is increasingly polarized, the importance of women holding office, the challenges she faced running, her new e-book "Fed Up with Congress," and what advice she'd give candidate Brendan Doherty.
