EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - This week on Newsmakers: House Minority Leader Brian Newberry, R-N. Smithfield, and State Rep. Michael Marcello, D-Scituate.

Governor Lincoln Chafee has proposed a new budget that includes a controversial plan to raise the state's meals tax on restaurant patrons to pay for an increase in education spending. Both Marcello and Newberry agree they oppose the plan, but offer up different solutions to boosting education funding. The pair also discuss the governor's legislative package to deal with financially struggling cities and towns and a proposal to increase the income tax on Rhode Islanders making $250,000 or more a year. Also, Marcello expresses optimism about the prospects for his bill geared at making Rhode Island government more transparent.
