EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - This week on Newsmakers: Brendan Doherty, Republican candidate for Congress.

Though he has a healthy lead in the polls, Doherty is a relative unknown in the world of politics. In his first extended television interview on the issues, Doherty stepped away from many of his fellow Republicans and called for an end to the Bush era tax cuts. Though he was cautious on some areas of federal policy, Doherty reaffirmed his pro-life stance, called for an end to President Obama's health care reform law and said he opposed the DREAM Act. Doherty – the former superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police – also comments on the recent guilty plea by the reputed former mob boss Luigi “Baby Shacks” Manocchio.
