EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - This week on Newsmakers: Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.
With an $828 million unfunded liability in the Providence pension system , Taveras argues the Chafee-Raimondo pension reform legislation must include tools for cities and towns to tackle their troubled plans. The mayor said Providence needs the ability to suspend cost-of-living adjustments as the state is planning to do. Taveras also discusses the “Occupy Providence” movement and says – while he understands their frustration and supports their message – he will go to the courts in the near future in an effort to move the protestors out of Burnside Park.
