EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - This week on Newsmakers: the same sex marriage debate with Martha Holt of Marriage Equality of Rhode Island and Christopher Plante of the National Organization for Marriage, Rhode Island. House Speaker Gordon Fox upset both sides earlier this week by announcing legislation for same sex marriage was dead and put his support instead behind civil unions. Opponents of gay marriage see civil unions as a stepping stone while supporters view civil unions as discrimination.

Then, Rhode Island has the fourth highest unemployment rate in the country. The new director of the Department of Labor and Training, Charles Fogarty – the former Lt. Gov. of the state – discusses his plan for long-term and short-term goals to move the needle.
