Newsmakers 12/7: Mayor Angel Taveras

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - With a legal battle brewing over the state's landmark pension reform law passed last fall, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is being dragged into the fray because he negotiated pension changes with unions in his city. Taveras says he thinks the state should also negotiate while the case moves its way through the courts because either side can always walk away from the table and let a judge decide. Plus, Taveras - who famously described the finances in Providence as a Category Five Hurricane - says the crisis has been downgraded to a "tropical storm." But he is still waiting on the police union to vote on proposed changes to their retirement plan aimed at saving the city money.
