NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) - Going green.
A local grocery store is one of the first in the state to recycle all of its leftover food.
Barrels and barrels of watermelon rinds used to be thrown away, and that and other food was adding up to huge yearly totals for the landfill.
Leean Brigido, third generation owner of Brigidos Market in North Smithfield, decided recently that composting was the best way to handle their leftovers.
It's a practice that's not just limited to the veggies.
A local famer picks up the compost several times a week, free of charge.
In addition to these pick-ups, the market also encourages customers to drop off items which can't be recycled at home.
Up until about a month ago, they had to pay a trash pick up fee for all of their leftover food. but with their composting effort, they no longer have to pay that.
