PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The West Broadway Neighborhood Association is setting up a group purchase that's the first of its kind in Rhode Island.
Kari Lang, the director of the WBNA, says her group is receiving a $500,000 grant which would allow businesses and homes in the neighborhood to buy solar panels.
"We had over 125 neighbors and businesses that wanted to participate," Lang tells Eyewitness News. "The interest was astounding."
In the end, only 30 will make the final cut. The winners have yet to be determined. Recipients will be able to lease the solar panels from the neighborhood association for 10 years. After that they can take over complete ownership. An average solar panel system is expected to soak up to 80% of energy costs for a typical home.
"It would certainly save folks money and do good for the environment," Lang said.
If all goes according to plan, the solar panels will be installed before the end of March.
