NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) - Lots of people these days are taking small steps to make their homes a little greener, but one brand new home in Narragansett really takes the prize.
From 200 year-old reclaimed floors, to led lights, the home is on the way to becoming one of the greenest in Rhode Island.
"We can pull up the graphic and pull up the data, and it allows us to make the decision of how we're going to use energy," said homeowner Kimberly Hageman.
This energy management system tracks hourly usage for homeowner Kimberly Hageman and her family. It also helped this home achieve special recognition from the U.S. Green Builders Council.
Geothermal water heats and cools the home so there is no oil
or gas bill. For this 45 hundred square foot home, that gives them
a total monthly energy bill of about 330 dollars for electricity.
Compare to the monthly bill for their old home, which was about
half the size.
Of course there is an upfront cost to going green, but with the energy savings, the Hageman’s expect to pay that off in about 5 years.
Joe Hageman said, "It can actually be done, this is a real home. This is not a show home, this is our house, we live here."
If you want to check out this ultra-green home, there is an open house this Saturday.
