FALL RIVER, MASS. (WPRI) - The city of Fall River announced Wednesday that it has purchased two new solar powered trash compactors.

This looks like an ordinary trash can, but it's not. The "Big Belly" trash compactor uses the power of the sun to improve the quality of life in Fall River and save some cash too. Mayor Will Flanagan announced that one is on the city's boardwalk, the second near the courthouse.

"What is unique about these trash compactors is that they're solar powered. We're using green technology to help with our trash disposal here in the city of Fall River" said Flanagan.

Each of the rugged compactors are scratch, dent and graffiti resistant. They were purchased through a $7300 grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative .

Mayor Flanagan said that the city will see how well these units work and if it is worth it, they may invest more money on an additional solar powered trash compactor
