PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence is stepping up its efforts to become more environmentally friendly.
The capital city has dubbed an entire neighborhood the ‘green corridor’ and filled it with eco-friendly and sustainable businesses and endeavors.
The Promenade district in Providence is being dubbed the green corridor, where energy efficiency and recycling are high priorities.
"This green corridor is a place for bringing new business, bringing new investment, growing our tax base and most importantly, creating new jobs," said Mayor David Cicilline.
Mayor David Cicilline says the city is making a real effort to nurture the green economy. He joined area business leaders for a tour of the area.
The building is the home to Alteris Renewables which is the largest installer of renewable energy systems in the northeast.
Across the street is United Natural Foods Incorporated, which distributes natural and organic food among other products.
They boast a solar array large enough to power their building which contains recycled carpet, wood and furniture.
They're also pounding out industrial art at the steel yard. Part of the property is non-profit where people can come to learn and create.
The other part of the site houses green businesses. In all,
there are about a dozen entities in this area of Providence
considered to be green.
