FALL RIVER, MASS. (WPRI) - Drinking lots of water may be an easy way to stay healthy, but environmentalists say the plastic bottles many people drink it out of is extremely harmful to the environment. A Fall River company is now doing their part to fight pollution, with a biodegradable container.
Experts say even recycling plastic bottles doesn't do enough for the environment because it takes a very complex process to break them down, but the Native Water company has created a new bottle that can be broken down naturally over time and is made from recycled materials.
Native Water President Rodger Cohen says, as far as he knows, his company is the only manufacturer making the environmentally friendly water containers.
Although some of the new bottles may still end up in landfills, Cohen says they are designed to break down on their own over a period of one to five years.
Native Water also gets their water from a source in the Berkshires, reducing their carbon footprint even more, and keeping cash close to home, as opposed to using water from distant sources.
The special bottles are already catching on here in Rhode
Island. The Rhode Island School of Design has decided to make the
Native Water product their only on campus water option.
