PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI/AP) - A group of homeless people who had tents set up on city-owned land in Providence had until 5 p.m. Monday evening to pack up and leave.
On Monday, a Supreme Court judge refused to temporarily halt the eviction of "Camp Runamuck". He also declined to issue a last-minute stay requested by the people that would have allowed them to remain in the tent city until their lawyer filed an appeal to the decision.
The camp residents moved to the city-owned land near Roger Williams Medical Center earlier this month after being evicted from state-owned land under the Interstate 195 bridge in East Providence. Before setting up camp there, they had been on state-owned land under an I-195 overpass in Providence, where they moved in January as a way to draw attention to their situation.
The residents of Camp Runamuck have reportedly set up camp in Pawtucket.
