BOSTON, MASS. (WPRI/AP) - Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Thursday that she will run as a Democratic candidate in the special election to replace the late Senator Ted Kennedy.
Coakley, who has been a prosecutor for 20 years - says she can continue to be "an effective voice for the people of Massachusetts." During a news conference in Boston, Coakley said she decided to run "because government should work well and work for everyone."
"I believe now is the time to move beyond the idea of `good enough' government and demand a new standard of excellence. I know that I need to prove to voters that I am the best candidate in this race and I believe I can do that," Coakley said.
Coakley is the most prominent candidate to officially declare that she will make a run at Kennedy's seat. Several others are rumored to enter the race, including former Red Sox Pitcher, Curt Schilling and Senator Kennedy's own nephew, Joseph Kennedy, III.
The special election will be held January, 19, 2010.
