WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - Kent Hospital put the call out Thursday for some furry volunteers. The Warwick hospital announced it's new pet therapy program.

The pets will be helping patients who may be withdrawn, disoriented, or uncommunicative. The volunteers' dogs will help facilitate the interaction.

“Pet therapy has shown to provide so many positive rewards and benefits for patients, caregivers, pet owners and others encountered throughout the hospital environment,” said hospital President and CEO Sandra Coletta. “It is no secret that our pets can sense our emotions, provide comfort, encouragement and lift our spirits. The same is the case with the pet therapy program – the joys of our pets can be shared with those who are sick, recovering and need a little cheering up.”

There are requirements for both the pet owners, as well as the animals.

Requirements for Dogs:

  • Must have completed a pet therapy training program
  • Must be evaluated by a representative of Therapy Dogs International at Kent Hospital
  • Must be registered through Therapy Dogs Int’l and receive certification.

Requirements for Pet Owners:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must complete a health screening provided by the hospital
  • Must attend the Hospital-wide Orientation
  • Must provide written references from two people who are not related to you.

There is an informational meeting on March 25th at 5:30 p.m. in the Doctor's Auditorium. Those interested can call 401-737-7010 ext. 1328 to register.
