Prov. school chief reveals reform plan

Brady calls for changes at underperforming schools

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence School Superintendent Tom Brady said Monday night teachers at four of the city's five underperforming schools will not be fired under his turn-around plan.

Charlotte Woods Elementary , Lillian Feinstein Elementary , Roger Williams Middle School and Health, Science & Technology High School are among the worst schools in Rhode Island.

The key points of Superintendent Brady's plan include:

  • Joint management between the teacher's union and the Providence School Department
  • Extended learning time
  • A new core curriculum

"This reform effort comes at a great time," Brady said Monday. "And it is going to do the right thing for our children and our teacher workforce."

Also Monday night, the Superintendent addressed a new facilities report which does call for the closure of Perry Middle School and Feinstein High School .

The report says the schools are either underutilized or too costly to repair.

Feinstein High School is also on the list of underperforming schools, but Superintendent Brady says it will not be closed because of performance.

More public hearings will be held before either plan can move forward.

Central Falls High School is the sixth and final school on the state's list of underperforming schools.

Union members and the Superintendent recently agreed to return to the bargaining table after the Superintendent in that city issued pink slips to every teacher at the high school.
