Cranston merger decision expected soon
School District plans to merge many rival teams

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - A decision on a controversial plan to merge many athletic teams at rival Cranston East and Cranston West High Schools is expected to be revealed on March 17.
Freshman baseball, basketball, and football programs were eliminated by the Cranston School Committee on February 23 , as was boys and girls tennis, boys and girls indoor track, girls field hockey, and golf.
Board members made the cuts to close a $130,000 deficit in the athletic department.
The programs are expected to be reinstated under a merger plan where athletes from both schools would compete on the same team.
The plan needs the approval of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, which is expected to reveal it's decision on March 17.
