PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former congressman Robert Weygand has decided against running to fill the seat being vacated by Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy , who is not seeking re-election.
Weygand said Thursday that he doesn't think it would be right to relocate to Kennedy's district to run for Congress. He lives in North Kingstown, which is outside Kennedy's district.
He said he wants to continue working as a vice president at the University of Rhode Island .
The 61-year-old Democrat represented Rhode Island's second Congressional district from 1997 to 2001. He tried unsuccessfully to unseat Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee in 2000.
The Democratic candidates include Providence Mayor David Cicilline, former Democratic Party chairman Bill Lynch and state Rep. Jon Brien.
