(UNDATED) - It's not easy staying warm during the winter months in New England, but this tough task is even more difficult, when your house is letting all the hot air out and allowing the cool air to creep in.
Making your house warmer comes down to two main things, do you have the right amount of insulation and have you sealed up all the cracks.
Lynette and John Malone know their home is cold -- what they don't know is why.
"I think some areas might be the windows, might be some older doors, but other than that I don't know," said Lynette Malone.
The couple's biggest concern is upstairs in the bedrooms-- where they use space heaters to keep their kids warm. To crack the this cold mystery, professionals from Pro-energy Consultants are brought in to perform a home energy audit.
Mark Cannella said, "We can actually identify exactly why they have high energy bills or why they have comfort issues."
First - all the air is sucked out of the house.
"As we pull air out of the home air has to come back in and that helps us understand where all the pathways or holes in the home exist,"said Cannella.
Thermal imaging detects cold spots. High tech equipment sees behind walls.
Turns out the problem in the bedrooms was in the ceiling and not the windows.
Fixing those insulation problems could save the Malones nearly 20 percent on their heating bill.
