WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - Though snow isn't expected to start falling until Wednesday, Department of Public Works crews and other agencies across the state are gearing up for what could be the biggest snow storm to hit Southern New England this year.
The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency has a 4 p.m. news conference planned, to layout its plans for the impending storm.
In Warwick, crews were breaking up with salt and warming up the trucks.
"We're ready to go. Yes we are," said David Picozzi, Warwick DPW Director. "We have about 80 pieces of equipment standing by, between city and private contractors."
All of the expected white stuff, could put the DPW budget in the red. Picozzi said the department has about $100,000 left in its snow removal budget.
"We're not over budget yet. But, if we do get the six to 12, we probably will go over this storm. But, we'll worry about the budget after we get the roads clear," he said.
Picozzi reminded residents to obey parking bans, take it easy on the roads and avoid unnecessary travel, so that crews can make the roads passable as soon as possible.
"We don't want it. We can't afford it. We want the sunshine to come. But again, we'll be plowing the streets no matter what."
