WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden is applauding the House vote to renew the Violence Against Women Act.

Biden says the legislation is urgently needed because too many American women still live in fear of violence. Biden sponsored the bill in 1994, while serving in the Senate.

House Republican leaders, aware of the need to improve their faltering image among women voters, allowed the bill to go the floor Thursday knowing a majority of their party would not support it.

The vice president went out of his way to praise House Republican Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia for not standing in the bill's way. Biden said of Cantor, quote, "He kept his word."
