PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is opposing the nomination of a Rhode Island trial lawyer to a federal judgeship.
President Barack Obama nominated Jack McConnell in March for a spot on the U.S. District Court in Rhode Island.
He was recommended by the state's two senators, Democrats Jack Reed and Sheldon
Whitehouse.
The chamber and other organizations yesterday wrote the leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee in opposition to McConnell's nomination.
They cited his career as a trial lawyer, including his work suing former lead paint companies, to suggest he is biased against business defendants.
McConnell declined to comment.
The committee is scheduled to take up McConnell's nomination later this week.
