PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Governor Donald Carcieri has ordered United States and Rhode Island flags to fly at half staff in honor of Senator Ted Kennedy.

Kennedy died at his home on Cape Cod late Tuesday after a long battle with brain cancer.

"There are few individuals who have made as great an impact on the political and social landscape of this great nation as Senator Kennedy. His passion, energy and commitment to his country have inspired a generation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, his children and his family," said Governor Donald L. Carcieri.

Flags will remain at half staff until Kennedy is laid to rest. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
