BOSTON (WPRI) - Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling may have his eyes set on Washington, stating on his blog Wednesday he has some interest in running for the Senate seat vacated by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy.

"Let's leave it at, I'll have to  make that decision very quickly," Schilling said during a phone interview with NECN.

However, before throwing his hat in the ring Schilling said, "many, many things would have to align themselves."

"My hope is that whatever happens, and whomever it happens to, this state makes the decision and chooses the best person, regardless of sex, race, religion or political affiliation, to help get this state back to the place it deserves to be," he said on his blog.

Schilling is registered to vote as Independent, but has been a long-time supporter of the Republican party. He campaigned for Sen. John McCain in 2008 and George W. Bush in 2004.

Kennedy, a staunch Democrat, died last week after a year-long battle with brain cancer.

So far, Attorney General Martha Coakley is the only person who's officially announced plans to seek Kennedy's seat.
