PROVIDENCE, R.I (WPRI) - Simon Property Group, Inc., the owner of several shopping malls nationwide, has shown interest in purchasing malls owned by General Growth Properties, Inc.

General Growth Properties is the parent of Providence Place Mall and The Silver City Galleria in Taunton. It also manages the Swansea Mall. The company filed for bankruptcy in April.

According to the Providence Business News, Simon is exploring whether to buy some of the properties owned by General Growth, however, they are not saying which malls they are interested in.

Locally, Simon owns Emerald Square Mall in North Attleboro, as well as  the nearby Wrentham Village Premium Outlets.

General Growth has until the end of February to submit a reorganization plan to the bankruptcy court, and Simon will have to wait until the process gets further along before it gets the opportunity to bid on the company’s assets, Sullivan said.
