PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island chapter of the Salvation Army is appealing for more donations to its Good Neighbor Energy Fund.
The nonprofit says frigid winter temperatures as well as the state's high unemployment rate has driven up requests for the help by 25 percent.
The Good Neighbor Fund is a safety net for families who do not quality for federal and state assistance programs, but need help paying their utility bills. The fund relies on donations from families and local businesses and corporations for support.
Salvation Army officials say the Good Neighbor Fund has raised more than $9 million and helped more than 36,000 families in need of temporary assistance. More than 2,750 requests for assistance are expected this year.
