PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Democratic lawmakers have stripped Rhode Island's Republican governor of the power to appoint interim U.S. senators.
The General Assembly on Tuesday overrode Gov. Don Carcieri's veto of legislation requiring special elections whenever an incumbent U.S. senator dies of leaves office unexpectedly.
House lawmakers voted 59-10 to override the veto, and the Senate voted 31-4 to make it law.
Carcieri previously could appoint a replacement to serve until the next general election, which happens every two years. If a vacancy opened within 70 days of a general election, Carcieri's appointee would serve until the following election.
Bill supporters say the change would prevent corruption and increase transparency, although Republicans called it a partisan power grab.
