CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - People in all sections of Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts are dealing with some of the worst flooding in 100 years.
State officials held a press conference on Monday afternoon, updating the public on the state's response to the historic floods.
Governor Donald Carcieri made and unprecedented statement, saying there is a possibility the state will close Route 95 in the Warwick and Cranston area if it warrants it.
"We're watching very closely sections of 95 right now. The major thoroughfares are going to continue to be open, but we have real questions, as to whether or not they might not be significant enough flooding to actually close sections of 95," said Gov. Carcieri.
The governor is urging people to get home by dinnertime and to stay off the roads when possible.
Major General Robert Bray announced that approximately 300 guard members have been called up to perform state active duty in assisting with flood control operations.
"The duration of the activation will be as long as necessary," stated Major General Bray. "We are prepared to put personnel and equipment where they will be best utilized."
