PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Democratic lawmakers are planning for the election of a successor to House Speaker William Murphy, who has promised to step down when the current session ends early next year.
Lawmakers say House Majority Leader Gordon Fox will meet with his supporters Tuesday night at a Providence restaurant to map out a strategy. Murphy has already endorsed Fox.
If he has enough support, Fox can call a caucus of Democratic lawmakers to elect a majority leader and whip and nominate a new House speaker. The speaker must be approved by a vote of all House lawmakers.
Democrats control all but six of 75 seats in the House. Rep. Gregory Schadone of North Providence is running against Fox, but he says Fox has enough votes to win if a caucus is called soon.
