PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A doctor involved in a wrong site surgery has been reprimanded.
The State Medical Board confirmed it disciplined Dr. Edward Akelman for operating on the incorrect finger-joint of a patient at Rhode Island Hospital back in October.
The reprimand goes on his record but does not limit his ability to practice.
The board also fined the hospital $150,000.
At the time of the surgery, the hospital said there was ambiguity in the timeout process.
In June of 2009, 14 hospitals in the state agreed to adopt standard protocols to prevent wrong-site surgeries. They were developed after a series of wrong-site surgeries in hospitals throughout the state.
The protocol includes having two licensed providers mark the operation site, requiring surgeons to mark the site with their initials and using a checklist before surgeries.
