PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Good news: RIDOT says they've finally finished overnight work on tearing down the old Wickenden Street Bridge section of I-195. However, the job that was supposed to take a week still isn't finished.
In a news release Tuesday, Rhode Island Department of Transportation spokesman Charles St. Martin III said the work will still impact motorists going through the area on weekdays, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
"This may require the closure of the Wickenden Street jug handle during this time," St. Martin said in the release.
The demolition work started Jan. 10. RIDOT has cited cold weather among the reasons for the delay.
The demolition of the bridge is necessary before a new on-ramp and Exit 2 offramp can be built for the Iway. Once the entire old section of I-195 is torn down, 30 acres of land will be freed up for development and public space.
