Two men were arrested Friday night after an incident on Orms Street in Providence. Officials said a man carrying a gun walked into a store.

Police and gang units arrested Noi Thao, who up until this week had been a streetworker with the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence -- and another man. Both are facing multiple charges, including having a gun without a permit.

The Institute's Teny Gross said police called him Friday night shortly after the arrest. Gross said Thao is a part-time streetworker who's been with the center for a few months, until he unexpectedly quit on Tuesday -- and disappeared briefly. "Something happened with him with stress levels," said Gross.

Police say the suspects fled in a car and were arrested moments later, but they said they could not give much more information.

Gross says even streetworkers aren't immune to trouble.

"We will be supporting him as well as whoever he had an incident with -- if there was one.

"It's part of our work, we take risks. We make a difference in this city as well as other cities, and we will continue to do that," said Gross.
