PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence public school students have raised thousands in cash for ongoing relief efforts in Haiti.

On Monday, Mayor David Cicilline and Superintendent Thomas Brady announced that the students of all 44 schools raised nearly $28,000 dollars.

Students were asked to make a small donation of $1 per person. School staff members made donation amounts of their choice.

Superintendent Brady had called on each school to organize efforts to raise funds for Haiti, after the earthquake struck. Many schools reported 100% participation for the cause.

Rhode Island Red Cross CEO Bruce Rutter was present to accept the donation on behalf of the International Red Cross.
