PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence police were called to the scene of a drive-by shooting Monday morning on Camp St.

According to officers on scene, a 21-year-old man was shot while he was walking down the street around 10:43 a.m.

A blue Volvo with a sunroof was scene leaving the scene of the shooting. Two people were inside the vehicle, police said.

The victim then ran to his grandmother's home on Camp St. and collapsed on the porch.

"It's not even 12 o'clock in the afternoon and one of my little cousins is already shot," said a family member.

Emergency crews took the victim to Rhode Island Hospital. Police chief, Col. Dean Esserman, said the man was undergoing surgery at the hospital and suffered life-threatening injuries.

"We don't believe it was random," Esserman said. "Right now, we have a young man in the city fighting for his life."

Though police said the victim was targeted, family members disagree.

"He's a kid if you need a laugh, you down and out, you need a laugh, that's who you go to," the victim's cousin said. "I think it was someone from another neighborhood just shooting anyone randomly they see."
