PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Providence Police Department is trying to stop two sorority-sponsored parties at Brown University after a similar event over the weekend ended in violence.

Police said more than 500 people turned out for the Delta Sigma Theta party "Scandalous" Saturday night.

Providence officers were called in for backup after the event go out of control. They said several fights broke out, police were forced to use pepper spray, and some partygoers even ended up trying to wrestle a gun away from a campus officer.

Four men from Massachusetts, who are not Brown students were arrested and several campus officers were hurt, police said.

Following the event, police chief Col. Dean Esserman told the University the department wants similar on-campus parties planned for Nov. 20 and Dec. 5 called off.
